BACTERIAL ANALYSES
BSA provides exceptional bacterial analyses. BSA offers enumeration of bacteria
density and biovolume in aquatic samples. In a bacterial analysis, samples
should be preserved with either formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde.
Bacteria are stained with either 4'-6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) or
acridine orange (AO) and drawn down onto black MCE filter disks. These
stains bind to the DNA within the bacterial cells. Using epifluorescence,
ultraviolet light is focused onto the dyed bacterial sample and fluoresced
light emitted from the sample is viewed through the microscope. We have two
epifluorescence equipped microscopes for these analyses. This counting method
allows for precise bacterial counts at client-chosen time points.
